about

Hull based composer James Rushworth brings his distinctive style of whirling soundscapes and shuffling rhythms to life for his EP "Intake", merging his interests from the travel and study of traditional Chinese music and instruments with analogue synthesisers and production techniques from contemporary electronic music. "Intake", the title track, fuses skipping rhythms with tender melodies processed and brought out from explorative recording sessions, as he explains, "I started Intake by recording a Guzheng, a harp-like instrument and percussive instruments like Kuai Ban (clappers) and Xiao Gou (small drum). I then got hold of a 'Dizi', a flute-like bamboo instrument. I kept jamming and learning to use these fascinating instruments and then I spent a lot of time on the computer coaxing out melodies and piecing different sounds together". The B-Side, "Gold Sands" explores more meditative wind sounds from those early recording sessions as well as an arpeggio line and other weightless sounds from a Juno 106 that flicker in for a brief moment, leaving us looking forward to hearing what will come next from this talented composer.
